Organising applications

Folders on the dashboard, and how to keep a growing list navigable.

Applications accumulate faster here than anywhere else you have worked. That is the intended outcome, and it means the dashboard needs a little care after the first dozen.

Folders#

Group applications on the dashboard. Create one, then drag applications into it.

The selected folder lives in the address, so a view can be shared — send a colleague the link to the folder rather than telling them where to look.

Deleting a folder never deletes applications. They become unfiled.

What to group by#

Whatever the question you are answering is when you open the dashboard.

  • By client, if you build applications for clients.
  • By department, if you are an internal team.
  • By statuslive, being built, retired — if the list is mostly finished things.

Grouping by what an application does is usually the least useful, because the name already says that.

Naming#

The name becomes the address and the browser tab. Short and literal beats clever:

  • GoodProposals, Supplier portal, Site surveys, Kit register
  • Less goodSales Pipeline Management Tool v2, Project Lighthouse

You can rename an application later in Settings › General. Renaming does not change the address on its own — that is in Settings › Domain, separately, so a rename does not break links people already have.

Retiring one#

There is no archive. Two honest options:

  • Stop the application from the application menu, which frees the machine and leaves everything else intact. Start it again whenever.
  • Delete it, which is permanent and takes the data with it.
